We, as guitar players, are constantly striving to express ourselves more creatively and more fluently. And, when we work on improving our soloing skills, oftentimes it’s so that we’re able to improvise more memorable and compelling solos.

Electric Guitar Lesson – Flat Picking Solos: Concept 2 Demo

Flat picking on a Telecaster – doesn’t get better than this. Basically, I mostly do up and down alternate picking with the right hand. It’s a wonderful technique for playing solos in a country style. A great exercise for developing this technique is just going up and down a chromatic scale in order to build up your right-hand speed. Try accenting the first note on every string. Practice with a metronome and start speeding it up as you develop it.

Stay relaxed, and once you’ve got it up to speed let’s move on to the next lesson where we’ll apply it to a performance study in the next lesson.

One of the wonderful things about music is that there are only 12 notes, and we can create so many sounds with just this! There are things you can change to inflect certain things with these notes, but the most important (to me) is dynamics.

Playing softly or loudly and being able to push and pull certain notes in either direction is key to your independence on the instrument. It allows your playing to breathe and flow together in their own dynamic world.

We’ll look at a few different approaches to playing dynamically here, and then we’ll check out some of these techniques over “Gold & Black”.
