The worldwide community of guitarists and musicians is one of the main reasons why TrueFire is where it is today. With our students’ input and feedback, we stay motivated to continue to expand our library and improve our music e-learning experience. So, while we spend a lot of time highlighting our incredible faculty and content, we think it’s time to move the spotlight on some of our most passionate users.

In this Student Spotlight series, we’ll be showcasing a member of the diverse TrueFire community and sharing their thoughts with you. We hope you find yourself inspired. Ignited we stand!

Student Spotlight: chrislizflet

Your Name:

Christine F.

How long have you been a TrueFire Student?

Since June 2020, just over 2 years.

Tell us a little bit about yourself as a musician:

Been playing for 45 years. My biggest initial influences were the singer-songwriters of the late 60s and the 70s. I also love Motown, funk, soul, and jazz, but am really just learning how to play in those styles. Favorite artists: Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, Steely Dan, Norah Jones, Talking Heads, Pat Metheny. I live on Vancouver Island, on the west coast of Canada.

What attracted you to TrueFire at first?

Lessons from Larry Carlton were my entry point. But then I saw the sheer scope of teachers and genres and started exploring.

What are some of your favorite TrueFire courses or lessons?

My favorite lesson is Josh Smith’s Spirit Song. Favorite courses: pretty much anything by Corey Congilio (Blues Guitar Fakebook-Rhythm), Robben Ford (Blues Motif Revolution) and Carl Burnett; Essentials of Soul Rhythm Guitar by James Hogan; Rhythm Mojo by Shane Theriot. It’s hard to choose.

How has TrueFire helped improve your playing?

TrueFire has helped to expand my genre horizons. I’d like to think my ability to hit a groove when playing rhythm has improved. Lots of new chord voicings make playing more fun.

Why do you use TrueFire, and how often?

I use TrueFire pretty much every day. I want to learn more, become more skilled, and get ideas for writing more interesting songs. Mostly because I love getting the chance to learn from such amazing players.

What is your favorite feature of the TrueFire learning experience?

If I had to name one, it’s the ability to manipulate the speed of playback and to loop sections so I can get things under my fingers and then speed up. My second favorite is the diversity of high-quality teachers and styles.

Who is your favorite TrueFire Educator and why?

For where I’m at skill-wise, Corey Congilio is my favorite. He explains things really clearly and provides lessons that build up to more difficult stuff. (There are lots of others who I really appreciate, but I’ll just answer the question.)

What would you like to see more of at TrueFire?

Time? Seriously, there’s so much to explore. I’m getting into the southern roots and soul stuff more and am really drawn to it. There’s already a fair bit, but more could be good.

Any other comments?

Just thank you. Finding TrueFire has been a gift to me.
