Tom Petty Dead at 66 [UPDATE: LAPD Retracts Confirmation; Condition Unclear]

According to TMZ, Tom Petty has died today after being removed from life support. Petty was found unconscious after going into cardiac arrest.

UPDATE: According to the USA Today, LAPD has retracted a statement confirming Tom Petty’s death. Condition unclear.

“Rocker Tom Petty remains hospitalized in Los Angeles after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home Sunday, the Los Angeles County Fire Department told USA TODAY.

Initial reports Monday from TMZ and CBS said Petty, 66, had died. CBS cited the Los Angeles Police Department as its source. LAPD later tweeted that this was an inadvertent mistake and that they had no investigative role in the case.”

UPDATE: Unfortunately, CBS News has also confirmed the report that Tom Petty has passed.

“We’re told after Petty got to the hospital he had no brain activity and a decision was made to pull life support.”

Original quote from TMZ:

“EMTs rushed to his Malibu home and were able to get a pulse. He was rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and our sources say he was put on life support. Petty’s condition is unknown but was critical from the moment he was found. Petty, who became famous with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1978 with “Breakdown,” is 66. We’ve been in touch with numerous people from Petty’s camp and they are clearly upset but not talking.”

More details to come.
