Explorations in Funk: #1 Chord Inversions

About the Guitar Lesson

Explorations In Funk will investigate the under represented style of funk guitar and take a look at the many elements that make up this style. Strap in and hold on tight as we delve deep into the world of the earthy and the gutbucket.

Funk guitar is more than just strumming 9th chords. It’s about strong songs, great arranging, and you either know the songs or you don’t.

I’ll break down some of the coolest songs and show you the stylistic tools used by Al McKay, Ray Parker Jr., Nile Rodgers, Prince, Ernie Isley, and a whole lot more.

I’ll show you chord voicings, octave lines, dyads, muting, and single note stank. It’s going to be fun, it’s going to funky, so get ready to get ready.

In Part One of this series you’ll learn 1st and 2nd dominant 7th chord inversions. Oscar will show you the chord shapes and teach you how to apply them to various musical situations to give your playing harmonic variety and funkiness.

Be sure to check out Oscar Jordan’s official website and new album, “Eclectic Soul“.
