Harmonizing a scale means building a chord on every degree of that scale using only the notes already inside it. You start on a scale degree, then stack tones above it by skipping every other scale step. The result is a chord built entirely from the scale’s own material. Do that on every degree. You get a full set of chords, all related, all drawn from the same note pool.
The quality of each chord depends on the intervals the scale contains at that point. Because a major scale has a specific pattern of whole steps and half steps, the spacing between stacked tones changes from one degree to the next. As a result, some degrees produce major chords, some produce minor chords, and one produces a diminished chord. The scale itself determines the outcome.
