Chords are a great source from which you can pull melodies and solos. After analyzing the notes in a chord, we can stack them on top of each other in a unique way to create what Andrea Quartarone dubs, “melodic chordal shapes.” Contemporary rock, jazz, blues and fusion guitarists like Greg Howe, Scott Henderson, and Bret Garsed use this technique to forge inspiring melodic lines in their solos.

Electric Guitar Lesson – Harmonization & Degrees: Concept 1
Let’s go through the fundaments of melodic chordal shapes. I’ll show you how to harmonize chord tones and use them as a base for your melodies and solos. If you do this on every scale degree, you get a set of different shapes. Each harmonization can be identified by the intervals between the chord tones. For instance, 5-6, meaning: take a note from a scale and stack a fifth and then a sixth on top of that note. Use only the notes from the specific scale you are in.
