The banjo, as an Appalachian instrument, relies on the use of the short 5th string as a “drone”. But, other strings can create additional drones that reference the old sounds of bagpipes, dulcimers, and early sounds. They mix beautifully with contemporary sounds. So, we typically teach drones in both open G Tuning and Double C tuning along with parts of songs or tunes for context.
