Chord construction is the missing link for most guitarists. You can spend years memorizing shapes, and many players do. However, the moment you understand what’s actually inside a chord, everything changes. You stop being a shape-memorizer and start being someone who can figure out any voicing, fix a chord that’s not working, or build something new on the spot. That shift matters more than any single new chord you could learn. Chord Construction Starts with Three Notes

A triad is the foundation of all chord construction. It stacks three tones: a root, a third above it, and a fifth above that. The root names the chord. The third determines whether it sounds major or minor. The fifth mostly provides stability.

Change the size of the third and the fifth, and you get a different triad type. A major triad uses a wider third and a standard fifth. A minor triad narrows the third. A diminished triad narrows both. An augmented triad keeps the wider third but raises the fifth. Because those four types cover almost every basic chord you’ll encounter, understanding them unlocks a huge portion of the fretboard immediately.

How the Seventh Changes the Feeling

Once you understand triads, adding a seventh to the top is the next step in chord construction. A seventh chord is a triad with one additional tone stacked above the fifth. That tone introduces either warmth or tension, depending on which type of seventh you use.

A major seventh sits a half step below the octave. It gives a chord a smooth, slightly dreamy quality. In contrast, a dominant seventh sits a whole step below the octave. That interval creates pull. It wants to resolve. That tension is why a dominant seventh chord shows up so often before a resolution in blues, jazz, and rock.

A minor seventh combines a minor triad with the same distance as the dominant seventh above the fifth. The result feels softer than a dominant seventh but still has movement. In addition, a half-diminished chord and a fully diminished seventh each appear frequently in jazz and classical-influenced writing, so recognizing them by their interval content pays off.

Most importantly, the type of seventh you choose is not decoration. It is a structural decision that shapes how the chord feels and where it leads.

Sus Chords and the Power of Leaving Things Unresolved

Sus chords take a different approach to chord construction entirely. Instead of stacking thirds, a sus chord replaces the third with either a second or a fourth. Because there is no third, the chord has no clear major or minor identity.

That ambiguity is the point. A sus chord creates a floating, unresolved sound. It pulls the listener forward. Consequently, sus chords appear often as a setup before a chord resolves to its major or minor version, though plenty of composers and players let them sit without resolving at all.

Extensions Add Richness Without Replacing the Core

Beyond the seventh, chord construction continues through extensions: ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths. These tones stack further above the seventh and add harmonic color without replacing what’s underneath.

A ninth chord adds the interval of a ninth above the root. In practice, that tone often sits an octave above what would be the second of the scale. It softens a chord’s edge. Furthermore, an eleventh and a thirteenth continue the stacking process, adding more overtones and blending the chord closer to the sound of a full scale played at once.

On guitar, you rarely voice all of these tones simultaneously. Instead, you choose which extensions to include based on what the sound needs. A common approach is to drop the fifth. It contributes little color, and use that freed-up finger for an extension. Therefore, knowing the theory lets you make those choices intentionally rather than by accident.

Altered Chords: Tension as a Deliberate Tool

Altered chords are where chord construction gets sophisticated. An altered chord takes the extensions, the ninth, eleventh, or thirteenth, and raises or lowers them by a half step. The result is a much more dissonant, tense sound.

Altered chords appear most often in jazz, where tension and resolution are handled in detailed ways. However, rock, funk, and blues players use altered voicings too, often without naming them as such. The sharp nine chord is a well-known example: it creates a harsh, clashing color that many players associate with certain classic rock tones.

Recognizing what makes an altered chord different, specifically that a core interval has been deliberately bent out of its standard position, helps you understand why it sounds the way it does. For example, chord substitution in jazz relies heavily on this logic, since substituting one chord for another depends on knowing which tones they share and which create the most interesting tension.

Putting Chord Construction to Work on the Neck

Theory without application stays abstract. So here is the practical payoff: once you know what intervals build any chord, you are no longer dependent on a fixed shape. You can find the tones in a new region of the neck, build a voicing that fits the register you are playing in, or adjust a chord to voice-lead smoothly into the next one.
